TIME TO MEET THE CHICKADEES

Cher hatched 4 chicks there are 3 yellow ones and one black one. Black one is the smallest.
Cher is from the first batch of chicks we got called the Chicklets.

Monday, June 8, 2009

This is Cher she is not looking so good. She is taking a needed break from her nest of 10 eggs. She is doing a good job so if the boys did their job than we should get a good hatch near the end of this month. Normally she has a pretty fancy hair do but no time for maintenance I guess lol
We went to auction and picked up our money for the last 4 we sold. We got 10 bucks each so that is ok since they were older and that is what we paid for new layers this spring.

TIME TO GO TO THE AUCTION

Spike, two old hens and one Nigon went to the auction. Not sure what we got for them. Makes more room in the hen house which we will need. Cher is sitting on 10 eggs. So more baby chicks around the 23rd of this month. We still don't know for sure if any more of the Little Rascals are roosters, we hope not.

LITTLE RASCALS ARE 11 WEEKS OLD

This is Peek-a-boo and we think she is female. Their mom Heidi is laying eggs again. Where as Henrietta who is this one's granny is only now thinking about laying again.
Rockie and Rockie 2. The black one we believe is female.

We still can't be sure which are the boys and which are that gals. We should be able to tell but we can't . This one we think is male because his tail is down and he is so colourful.

NOW THATS AN EGG

Danny looked after the chickens while we were away and when he stopped over the other day he brought us one of the eggs he had collected. It turned out to be the only double yolker we have ever had.

LITTLE RASCALS ARE FOUR WEEKS OLD

They sure are growing fast, much faster than the chicklets.
Peek-a-boo and Rockie2 still hang out together although when in close quarters they tend to play fight. They love being outside

LANCE HAD TO GO

Had to say Good bye to Lance. Rocky would not let Tonto do much he chased him off all the time. So Lance had to go to the auction and Tonto will take over Lance's duties . He is very pretty I expect he went to a hobby farm. Man are his hens pissed off. They won't shut up. Marv better get Tonto moved over to their pen.

LITTLE RASCALS TURN 3

They are really growing and look scruffy now that real feathers are growing in.
If you follow the blog you know this chick at Salt  but HE is renamed Peek- a -boo since when he first hatched in was the brave one always peeking out when his mom would warn them of danger. Since its kind of a sissy name for him when he grows up he will be called Boo.
The one in front you know as Pepper but is now called Rocky2. Rocky is head honcho around here we think he will grow up to look like him.
We think the last 3 are pullets

LITTLE RASCALS ARE TWO WEEKS OLD

Well it took me all week to get this blogged my computer has been giving me grief. Fingers crossed it works this time or if I was in South Africa I would be saying thumbs crossed lol

THE LITTLE RASCELS ARE ONE WEEK OLD TODAY

Their feathers are coming in. Marv thinks one of the fawn coloured ones is a rooster and one of the black ones is a rooster too. We shall see if he is right. He based it on size and they are less timid.

WHOSE YOUR DADDY?

Chickens came inside for a bit today while Marv cleaned the nest out.
There are two like this I believe they are from Sophie's eggs. Sophie is one of the chickens on the front page of blog.
Three look like this , eggs from black hens.
The big question is Whose the daddy? Is it Rocky or Tonto?
Only time will tell.

CHANGED THE NAME

Well twins turned into 5 so the family name is The Little Rascals and their names we dont know yet. When she was still sitting on eggs she would reach out for the food and throw it at the little chicks to get them to eat it was so cute. Its such fun to watch them.

TIME TO MEET THE SPICE TWINS

Marvin was so excited when he came in from the chicken coop this morning. Meet Salt and Pepper. She is still sitting so if we get more the names will change :)
Heidi is sitting on 9 eggs but it was not the best conditions here weather wise for a broody hen and chickens fighting over the eggs. I said I would be happy to get one hatched so I am very happy to get two.
They are already so curious but she wont let them go

NEW CHICKENS

I am not sure what is wrong with the blogger program but it won't let me upload photos. So I can't show you the 3 new hens we got. They are pretty brown ones. Just starting to lay. so I type that and try again and it worked finally after days of trying. But now it won't let me upload another one. - then id did lol
Lance lost his buddies but he now has is own flock of hens to look after. He keeps busy finding food for them and alerting them when he suspects danger. The new ones are not with him but the chicklets are the ones he was given to mind.Chicklets are of course big now. Two more weeks until we find out if Heidi's eggs are going to hatch.

HAD TO SAY GOODBYE

Well we are back from the auction. We sold The Lone Ranger and Butless we got $13.00 each- so thats not too bad but I am afraid they will be in a stew pot. There were alot of roosters being sold and they were being bought from basically just 3 or 4 people. They can't possibly have a use (or one I want to think about) for all those roosters.  We tried to candle Heidi's eggs to see if they are fertile. It looks like they are not. Perhaps we sold the wrong roosters. lol
Two more weeks to go.

INCREDIBLE HULK UPDATE

I thought you might enjoy the email I got back from Incredible Hulks new mom.

"It was a pleasure meeting you and Marvin today.

"The Incredible Hulk has met Big Red; Big Red doesn't look so big next the Incredible Hulk. He got right down to business and had "had" her within twenty minutes. Of course, he gave off a few good crows afterwards to announce his masculinity to the local wildlife.
I'm looking forward to the blog and will keep in touch, Linda. Thank you for the Incredible Hulk.
Marcy "

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

Well after months of changing our mind on what to do with the roosters we bit the bullet (sadly ) and put Incredible Hulk, Lone Ranger and Butless on Craigs list. Heidi is sitting on 9 eggs and it looks like others might get broody so we need to be able to seperate them. That means changing the Bad Boy Pen's batchelor pad into a nursury.  Today the Incredilbe Hulk went off to his new home. I meant to take a photo but forgot. Marcy his new mom says she will send me a photo with his new girlfriend Big Red. Sounds like a match to me. :)  Marcy saw the coops Marvin built and said she has chicken coop envy ;) i hope we can find good homes for the other two .

TOUGH WINTER FOR THE CHICKENS

Well the chickens have been living the quiet life this winter. They were locked up for about 6 weeks because of all the snow. They were not happy and egg production went right down.Just enough eggs to supply the two of us.
But its been nice the last couple of weeks and production is up and The Lone Ranger is up to his old tricks.
He is part of the roosters in the bachelor coop and flew over the fence (and old trick) and The Incredible Hulk decided to join them. Tonto used to follow him but he is with the hens and is not about to leave lol. So the bachelors got their wins clipped.
One of the chicklets must have decided to start laying eggs. I have never seen an egg this small.
